These are of the many questions asked about
NITROX. Before we start, NITROX is the breathing
mixture that you are breathing now. It is called
Normoxic, this is 79% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen.
Nitrox mixtures greater than 21% Oxygen, is referred
to as (EAN) Enriched Air NITROX. This most
common NITROX mixtures used today are NN1
(32%) and NN2 (36%).
NITROX History
NITROX has been around since 1943. During 1959
Military and Commercial divers were trained in the
use of NITROX. The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) used NITROX
in support of scientific diving operations since the
1970’s. Advanced level sport divers involvement has
increased during the past five years.
What does the future hold for us NITROX
divers?
Certifications are on the increase, computers at a
reasonable cost, a decrease in DCS accidents and
more dive centers, providing NITROX. |
Advantages of NITROX
1. The real advantages of EAN is that it provides
recreational divers with additional safety margin
when used with regular air tables or computers. 2.
The extension of the no decompression limits. 3.
May be less susceptible to Nitrogen narcosis. 4.
Feels good, lack of post dive fatigue. 5. Breathing
EAN can help significantly reduce asymptomatic or
silent bubbles after dive.
